19 Walsworth Yearbooks Schools Honored as Best of Show at Philly JEA/NSPA Convention
It was a wildly successful trip to Philadelphia for Walsworth Yearbooks schools this past weekend as 19 of them received Best of Show recognition at the JEA/NSPA Fall National High School Journalism Convention, including two who took first place in their category.
Walsworth schools filled out seven of the 10 Best of Show award slots in the Yearbook 360+ pages category. They included:
- 1st place: Hauberk, Shawnee Mission East High School, Prairie Village, Kansas
- 3rd place: The Lair, Shawnee Mission Northwest High School, Shawnee, Kansas
- 4th place: Chieftain, Jupiter Community High School, Jupiter, Florida
- 6th place: Raider, Gulliver Preparatory School, Miami, Florida
- 8th place: The Marquee, Alexander W. Dreyfoos School of the Arts, West Palm Beach, Florida
- 9th place: Panther, H.B. Plant High School, Tampa, Florida
- 10th place: Ayrie, Liberty North High School, Liberty, Missouri
In the Yearbook Junior High/Middle School category, two Walsworth schools were honored, including one who took the top prize.
- 1st place: The Round-Up, Woodland Junior High School, Fayetteville, Arkansas
- 3rd place: The Falcon’s Yearbook, Coral Academy of Science Middle School, Reno, Nevada
Six Walsworth schools made the top 10 Best of Show list for Yearbook 305-360 pages.
- 2nd place: Heritage, Shawnee Mission South High School, Overland Park, Kansas
- 4th place: Lone Star, James Bowie High School, Austin, Texas
- 5th place: Brickhouse, Shawnee Mission North High School, Overland Park, Kansas
- 6th place: Flashback, Rock Bridge High School, Columbia, Missouri
- 7th place: The Arena, Legacy High School, Mansfield, Texas
- 9th place: The Talon, Olathe South High School, Olathe, Kansas
Two more Walsworth schools were included in the top 10 list of Yearbook 257-304 page classification.
- 2nd place: Maverick, McNeil High School, Austin, Texas
- 3rd place: The Comet, Austin High School, Austin, Texas
In the Yearbook 144-256 pages category, Walsworth had two out of the 10 schools represented.
- 5th place: Excalibur, T.R. Robinson High School, Tampa, Florida
- 6th place: Teresian, St. Teresa’s Academy, Kansas City, Missouri
Four photographers from the Shawnee Mission East Hauberk also placed in the convention’s individual Photojournalism contests, including Josie Mangine, who took 1st place in Sports Photo.
William Griffith from Shawnee Mission East placed 9th in Sports Photo. Emmy Barrett of the Hauberk took 2nd place in Feature Photo, while Paige Bean finished in 7th place.
The Best of Show competition is typically held at every national JEA/NSPA convention and recognizes overall excellence among the attendees and entries.
