Entries from Walsworth Yearbooks schools win, place highly in NSPA individual contests
Four entries from three Walsworth Yearbooks schools were honored this weekend with the top prize in their category when the National Scholastic Press Association (NSPA) announced the results of its 2019 individual contests at the Fall National High School Journalism Convention in Washington, D.C.
Photo of the Year
Leading the way for Walsworth was two first place finishes for The Lion staff from McKinney High School in McKinney, Texas, in the Photo of the Year contest.
In the News/Feature photo category, Elizabeth Chan took first place, while in the Sports Reaction photo category, McKinney’s Abney Garcia took the top prize.
Also in Sports Reaction, Aidan McCall from J.W. Mitchell High School finished second; and Hanna Corny from Palo Alto High School, Abby Ryan from Shawnee Mission Northwest High School and Melanie Russell from McKinney High School were each named honorable mention.
In the Environmental Portrait category, Nicholas Styers from Shawnee Mission Northwest High School placed third and fourth for his two Finalist entries. In the Sports Action category, Allie Erdner from Shawnee Mission East High School was named honorable mention.
Design of the Year
In the Design of the Year contest, Yearbook Theme package category, the Hauberk staff from Shawnee Mission East High School took first place; while the McKinney High School staff finished fourth. El Camino Real Charter, Shawnee Mission Northwest High School and Notre Dame de Sion High School were all named honorable mention.
For the Yearbook Spread design category, Lexi Harris from McKinney High School placed third, while Hannah Ilao and Ashleigh Soto from El Camino Real Charter finished fourth and Alieu Jagne from Shawnee Mission Northwest High School was fifth. Madison Sophia from Hagerty High School and Savannah Gery from Legacy High School were chosen honorable mention.
In the Infographic category, Kimball Gogel and Lilah Powlas from Shawnee Mission East High School placed second and the Salmagundi staff from Seminole High School finished fifth. Ethan Schreiber from Shawnee Mission Northwest High School was honorable mention.
In the Illustration category, the Salmagundi staff from Seminole High and Lilah Powlas from Shawnee Mission East High School were named honorable mention.
Middle School
Under Middle School, Story of the Year, Dia Granillo from Cactus Canyon Junior High School in Apache Junction, Arizona, finished in first place for her story on dealing with grief.
Also in the Middle School, Story of the Year category, Amber Henderson and Emily Sosa from Cactus Canyon Junior High School placed fifth. Ellie Gilbert and Ava Osborne from Woodland Junior High School were chosen honorable mention.
In the Middle School, Photo of the Year category, Kylie Mollner from Woodland Junior High School placed second and Brighton Smith from Woodland Junior High School placed fifth.
